IP Visiting Fellowships

Visiting Fellows are visitors to the Institute from the UK or overseas who spend a significant period of time at  the Institute (usually between three and eleven months) on their own research. It is also possible for visitors to come for shorter periods.

Visiting Fellows are provided with office space, access to computing and printing facilities and library access. Visiting Fellows are expected to make a contribution to the Institute's programme of events during their stay. Fellows are usually members of other academic departments or postdoctoral researchers.

Application procedure for visiting fellowships

Applications should consist of a short letter describing the proposed duration and timing of stay, as well as a brief (one-page) research proposal, a short curriculum vitae and the names and email addresses of three referees. Applications should be made between 1 November and 31 January prior to the year of the intended visit. So those who wish to apply as visiting fellows for the academic year 2014-15 should apply by 31 January 2014. Decisions will be made in March 2013 for the 2013-14 Fellowships (deadline now closed) and in March 2014 for the 2014-15 Fellowships.

To apply for 2014-15, please complete and return the following downloadable form together with your application. Applications by email attachment (to philosophy at sas.ac.uk) are preferred.

Junior Research Fellowships

The Institute is home to the University of London's Jacobsen research fellows in philosophy, funded by a bequest from Mr Jens Jacobsen. The current Jacobsen fellows are Dr Alexander Douglas and Dr Emily Caddick (from Sept 2011).

From 2008 to June 2009, we welcomed Dr David Yates as a British Academy postdoctoral research fellow at the Insitute for three years.

Funded SAS Fellowships

The School of Advanced Study has its own funded fellowship scheme for distinguished senior visitors with an interest in the activities of more than one Institute of the School. The School's fellowship scheme is administered by the School and not by the IP; details may be found here.
