BARRY C SMITH, DIRECTOR
Professor Barry C. Smith from the School of Philosophy at Birkbeck has been appointed as Director of the Institute from September 1 2008. His main work is in the philosophy of language and mind; he is particularly interested in knowledge of language and its relation to other aspects of the mind. He has also published on the emotions, the perception of taste and on self-knowledge. His homepage is here.
HELEN BEEBEE, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
Prof Helen Beebee will be joining the Institute from 1 September 2011, on secondment from Birmingham for 2 days a week.
SHAHRAR ALI, ADMIN MANAGER
Dr Shahrar Ali has served the Institute since its foundation as the Philosophy Programme in 1995. He did his PhD in philosophy at UCL on the topic of lying and deception in public life. Shahrar served on the Executive of the Society for Applied Philosophy 1997-2007, has undertaken research in the European Parliament, and is a sessional lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at Birkbeck.

ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Institute has an Advisory Council, made up of academic philosophers, some senior members of the University of London, and other people connected to philosophy. Members of the Council come from across the UK. The chair of the Council is Baroness Onora O'Neill.
The Advisory Council oversees the activity of the Institute and advises the director on its business. Here are the current members of the Advisory Council.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Day-to-day management of the Institute is overseen by the Management Committee, drawn from the philosophy departments of the Colleges of the University of London.
